Bing… Bang….

July 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Today’s Microsoft and Yahoo announcement for a 10-year Internet-search partnership has the potential to disrupt the search marketing and advertising landscape.

According to Business Week,  In a long-awaited pairing aimed at taking on Google, Yahoo will handle ad sales while Microsoft gets the real prize: data on who’s doing what online

Yahoo will scrap its own efforts to best Google in search and instead rely on Microsoft’s recently debuted Bing search engine. Ads placed next to those search results would be served up not by Yahoo’s ad platform, dubbed Panama, but by a Microsoft technology called AdCenter. Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz “is essentially giving up on search,” says Danny Sullivan, editor of Search Engine Land.

Wall Street Journal mentions that the revenue-sharing agreement has Microsoft paying 88% of the search revenue generated from its sites during the first five years of the agreement.

By adding Yahoo’s 20% market share, Bing assures its place as the only search engine provider other than Google with size that really matters.

Who says competition is wealthy ? sorry I meant  healthy ?!

Well… it’s been a while since my last post and it has been a very interesting time indeed – First of all, IBM Super Women Group event in Raleigh on June 12 was great – Ruth Taylor and the team organised a first class event with so many great ladies, Jeanne Murray was one of the co-presenter – My presentation, “Create an electronic footprint – Social Media and you ” was I believe very well received. Quick flight to NYC on that afternoon, for IBM 2009 Social Media Marketing Summit – We had over 650 attendees, BPs, Customers and IBMers joined us for what was going to be one of the greatest social media marketing event I attended lately – Not that I’m biased as the co-chair of the event with Pauline Ores, but I have to say that the agenda was amazing … Best practices / case studies in the morning such as Intel or Pepsico – The afternoon was dedicated to vendors such as Cotweets, Linked-in and our agencies Text 100 and Ogilvy. The event was broadcasted in 5 cities (Stuttgart, Paris, London, Raleigh, San Jose) and over 300 people joined us on line via Lotus connections. Since then, I’m back in my little office down in London, and I have been so busy with running so many SMM education calls to the team across the globe, that I haven’t blogged  much since my US Trip. Watch this space, going to put some pictures of those events onto my blog … as soon as I can get my camera to work again ! Damn, I should have bought a new one on Times Square, I knew it…

nothing happened

(source: Techcrunch blog)

Today is the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square ‘incident and several high profile Internet sites have been blocked in mainland China. These include Twitter.com, Flickr.com, Live.com, and Bing.com… That is what I would call a heavy-handed censorship…….. And it also clearly demonstrates the power of social media, and the power of the internet. My thoughts are for this mysterious man and all the people who suffered that day in 1989.

B2B and B2C … OK but I think let’s move on and concentrate what really matters today :  C2C – Cos that is what social media is all about right… C2C

Saying that social media is important is no longer visionary thinking  but a  statement of  fact and just plain common sense.

Don’t forget to join us  on June 17th at  IBM Social Media Marketing Summit 2009 and find out more – You will be able to hear about best practices in utilizing social media tactics as an integrated component of more traditional marketing program activities
